German Born Kelvin Akpoguma Switches Alligiance To Nigeria

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick disclosed that the German-born defender indicated his interest in flying the colors of the Super Eagles.

”We have also resolved that anybody who wants to play for Nigeria must write to us to make some commitment,” Pinnick said.

“We don’t want to make the mistake we made in the past.

“Already, Kelvin Akpoguma and one other have already written to commit their future to Nigeria. They know that Nigeria is a big country to launch anybody higher than they imagine.”

The 25 years old Kevin Akpoguma who plays for TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga was born to a Nigerian father and a German mother in Germany. He has represented Germany at all youth levels.

Predominantly a center-back, Kevin can also deputize as a full-back. The 6 ft 4 in defender possesses a physique required for elite defenders. Tackling and ground duels are key components of his strengths.

Kevin first started he was open to representing Nigeria back in 2018. His switch of allegiance will come as a boost to Nigeria. He could be in line for a first Super Eagles call-up when Rohr releases his squad list for next month’s friendlies.

The Super Eagles boast the defensive expertise of William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, Leon Balogun, and Semi Ajayi. Adding Kevin Akpoguma to this list would leave the national team coach spoilt of choices at center-back.
